WEEK 6 BLOG (2/14 - 2/20)

For years the NCAA has had a partnership with groups like EA Sports to use their member schools information in exchange for a multi-million dollar fee.  Both entities have benefitted from this partnership.  They have profitted financially by being able to use the likenesses of the stadiums, schools, uniforms and even the players.  While the schools have profitted, the players have not been given any of thes additional monies.  This is why a lawsuit has been filed on behalf of the collegiate athletes whose likenesses have been used in these games.  The NCAA contends that they are compensated through scholarships and the education that they receive.  They go further to state that if they compensated them, the athletes would become professionals and would no longer be deemed amateurs as their rules mandate that they be.

Should college athletes be paid for being used in video games?  Should accepting a scholarship / education be enough to prevent them from earning any other money for their performance on the field?  Should a company like EA Sports be held responsible for these policies and should they be forced to compensate the athletes that have brought them so much money?  If successful, should any and all athletes from past years be able to file their own lawsuits?  What impact might this have on the video game industry and is it worth it?  (PART I due by 2/18 ; PART II due by 2/20)

  1. I don't think that them being in a video game should not be a huge deal. The chance to be in a video game and be famous should be payment enough for these young athletes. The players should not be paid to play because they are playing a school sport. They players should just be glad that they are good enough to be in video games and eventually into the NFL.

  2. No they shouldnt be paid for being used in video games, because then a lot of sutdents will be getting more money than others. no it shouldnt prevent them fromdoing anything. THe company shoulndt be held responsible becaue they madea game that is amazing. no one should be able to file any lawsuits. The price would go up and more people wouldnt buy it.

  3. I do think college athletes should be paid for being used in video games. I don't think EA Sports should be held accountable for paying the athletes, it should be the video game creators. If successfull i do think that any and all athletes from past years should be able to get some profit out of it. The impact on the video game industry might cause the games to go up in prices a little more, but having the consent of the athletes would be better than keep having athletes file for lawsuits. I do think it would be worth it.

  4. I agree with Robbbie about the pricing range would go up, but i don't think people would stop buying the games just because the prices went up a little bit.

  5. I do not think te playersshould be compensated. For oe if the were they would become pros and secondly most of these players are on free-ride scholarships. While some people have trouble sending their children to school at all they get free money simply becuase they can play a sport better. They are already compensated ennough and if they go pro they won't need more money. I don't think past players should be able to file suit either. If these players re allowed to file suit it would completely rob a multi-millon dollar company and could possibly end the company all together.

  6. I agree with Rob. THe companies shouldn't have to pay the price. The customers would be th ones paying the real price and sometimes the games cost 60 or 70 dollars. Customers would stop buying. I know I would and will if the prices go up any further.

  7. I agree with Josh. Being in the game should be payment enough. Some of these players will even go on to play pro so they don't need to be compensated.

  8. I think that they should just appreciate the fact that their in a video game. They don't deserve to be compensated for being in a game because their names are not directly used. PLus EA sports would have to spend millions of dollars to compensate for using the college athletes in their game. I think the scholarships are a good enough compensation for the athletes.

  9. I disagree with taylor because regardless of the prices going up on sales, EA sports would be losing millions of dollars to compensate all the current and past players used in their game.

  10. I agree with Josh when he says that the recognition and the chance to be in a video game is reward enough

  11. I think the players should no be paid for being in the video games. The players are receiving enough fame for being in the games. The scholarships they earned to play the sport should be good enough. If the video game industry loses this case then they will lose tons of money.

  12. I agree with mason when he said they do not deserve the money because their names are not directly used.

  13. I agree with Wyatt with the players would become pros because not all of them deserve to be.

  14. I don't believe all the student athletes should be paid. Its a video game. The purpose of the game is to be fun and I think paying athletes to simulate real game activities. If the college athletes really want to be paid, then don't use those athletes and just use volunteers. I think there would be many college athletes who would do it. If EA Sports has to pay the college athletes then they probably won't have any money to create the video game

  15. I agree with Taylor, If the law suit is won then EA Sports will most likely go bankrupt with all the money they would have to pay to the players used in their games. The whole ordeal would just be a big hassel.

  16. I agree with Brad. The whole idea of the video game is that it is a game and people need to not be so up tight abou teverything. They whould just live their life and be glad that they are good enough to be in a video game.

  17. I don't think that every player in this game should get paid. Like Brad said, the game is just supposed to be for fun. If you aren't that important on a team, then it shouldn't be a big deal. Sure they have worked really hard to get to where they are, but maybe they need to work harder. They shouldn't be immature and sue a company. Plus they are still in college, so they still have their whole life to make money.

  18. I totally agree with Taylor that EA sports will go bankrupt. EA sports can't pay everyone because they will probably run out of money to pay everyone. Then, no more games will even be produced for everyone to play.

  19. Everyone that was put in the game should just be happy. They really need to stop whining and enjoy it.

  20. I don't think that every player in the game should get paid unless their name was used within the game. An appearance of a character that resembles a famous college athlete, but does not go by his name should not be able to win this lawsuit because the money isn't made from their face, it's made because of their name.

  21. I don't think that the players should be paid for being in the game unless their name is specifically used. The game is recreational. There really is no importance to it. Suing the companies is just another scam for the college athletes to make money.

  22. I agree with Hannah when she said they are being immature. They really do have their entire lives left to make money so why should they be immature about it now to make some extra cash?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I agree with Brad when he said that the game is just for fun. And he's right. The game is recreational and i'm sure that many athletes would simply volunteer for it.

  24. I agree with Taylor and Hannah that EA Sports will indeed go bankrupt if they lose the lawsuit because they will have to use their profits to pay all of the players that appeared in their games

  25. I agree with Josh on his opinion that the athletes are receiving enough credit because they are stars in a famous game created by an even more famous company. That in itself is compensation enough.

  26. I think that those athletes choaen tk be kb the game have enough of a reward. This gives those players a chance to really make people aware of them. I don't think they should be paid for a privilege. They have a whole life of careers ahead of them.

  27. I agree with josh 100%. PaYers are lucky just to have.the chance to be on a game. They are probably getting paid at college anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I disagree with Taylor because I don't think that a video VMWare can.really make or break ur career. If I see Someone doing awesome with a player I won't automatically become his fan bc its just a game.

    ReplyDelete
  29. i agree with kylie on the players on the game not being payed becauyse they have their whole carrers ahead of them

  30. i agree with kim on the suing the company is just another way for college to get money becsue thay would find anything to try to get money

  31. I dont think college athletes should be paid. They get enough money from scholarships and stuff that should count as being paid. They are also lucky to be on the game because it gives them a chance to have people know their name. Overall, they should not be paid anything other than scholarships.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I agree with Josh when he said the players should be happy that they are good enough to be on a game. They shouldn't complain that they aren't getting paid when their name is getting out there.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I disagree with Taylor when she said they should get paid. They shouldn't be paid because getting a full ride scholarship to college is enough of a payment.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I believe that college athletes should not be paid for how they are protrayed in a video game. It is a video game and they should be honored that they have the opportunity to be in one. Since it is a realistic view on the person then they should be good at the sport so they will be happy they are a part of the game instead of not doing well.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree with Robbie this game is getting them opportunities for fans to get their names out for the next level where they will be getting paid.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I agree with immature, the athletes that are complaining are probably not getting drafted so they need a way of getting money and this way is sophomoric

  38. I agree with Brad when he says that they should use volunteers, that would be a better way to get sport players to not file for all these law suits.

  39. I agree with Josh when he said that they should just be happy with being good enough to be in the game. It should be something to brag about not something to get paid for.

  40. I also think it is inmature. Really? It should be fun to use the new technology. The athletes should not be fun.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I don't think college athletes should be paid for being in these video games. A couple years ago there was a huge discussion about this and it was decided that no college athletes should be paid. Some of them get to go to college for free with full ride scholarships. If they aren't good enough to become professionals and get paid millions, then they should get a degree and find a job instead of suing people.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I agree with Robbie. These athletes get paid millions in the professional leagues and should not have to worry about money.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think Mason has it right. They should enjoy the fact that they are even in the video game. If they don't want EA Sports to use their likeness, then they shouldn't play college sports.

    ReplyDelete
  44. The players should not be compensated for anything. These athletes get a free education for playing a sport. They have plenty of time in life to get paid for what they do. The games would not be fun if EA did not use player likenesses. The game would change forever if they payed players while still in college.

  45. I agree with Nick. Players should not be paid to play a college sport when their college is being paid for by the university.

  46. I agree with mason. Not many people get to be in a video game and these players just take it for granted.
