WEEK 5 BLOG (2/7 - 2/13)

Last week saw some crazy weather the likes of which we haven't seen in a while.  The ice especially reeked havoc on schools as all Indianapolis schools were out for three days, and many were out for four days.

Were conditions really bad enough to warrant closing schools for this long?  Was it wise for some schools to return on Friday while others were still closed?  Given that those days will have to be made up, was it worth it to you as a student to have those days off?  Since those days will have to be made up, what days make the most sense to you?  (PART I due by 2/10  -  PART II due by  2/13)

  1. I believe that the weather was bad enough to warrant so many closings. The roads may have been cleared in one or two days, but back roads, neighborhoods, and driveways still have ice on them and that is definitely dangerous enough to close school. The dilemma of some schools being open or not was because of the bus system and Roncalli does not have one. It was not worth the 3 days off. I would rather have a 4 day weekend any day. The days that make most sense to make up is the friday and monday off our four day weekend.

  2. yes, I believe that safety first was the best thing the schools could do. Their decision to put school on hold was a very intelligent idea becase if students would have went to school thee would have been many accidents and injuries to not only students but teachers. Even though it was the right thing to do i would have rather waited for the four day weekend becasue it would be longer and more fun personally. Even though that was my thougt the overall decision made was a very smart one and it paid off in the end avoiding injury.

  3. Remember that we need to make up three days, so you need to find a third...

  4. I believe that it was worth it to take all of those days off. Many places got a lot of ice and it takes awhile for it to go away. Since the air stayed cold, the ice wasn't going to go anywhere. People that live in the middle of nowhere weren't going to be able to go anywhere without risking getting in an accident. It is better for people that live more in the country to stay home. It is a lot safer. Since many neighborhood roads do not get cleared either, then it was worth the three days.

  5. I thought the roads were pretty bad last week during the storms and after. I tried many times even over the weekend to get my car out from our alley and was not able to ecause there was simply to much ice under my tires. I do think that schools should've been closed for the number of days tey were. I thought it was wise for schools to return even though some did not. The roads were pretty clear by Friday an although there is still some ice on roads it is not enough to make a large impact as it did last week. I don't really care about making up the days I'd rather not put them at the end of the year and i don't mind giving up winter break for the days either. As long as i get out of school atleast one or two days close to the date set on the calendar I'm good.

  6. I thought that the road conditions were bad enough to warrant school closings. There were sheets of ice on the road so schools take the chance of their students getting in car accidents on the way to school. I think we should of gotten friday off because there was no way we could of made up the missed work in one day so we should of just started up the next week. I think we should make the days up at the end of the year

  7. I agree with Alex when he says that he would have rather had the planned four day weekend instead of the snow days but we do have to take in account the risk of students driving in the bad conditions to get to school

  8. I agree with josh when he says that we should make up the days missed on the monday and friday we were supposed to get off

  9. School needed to close all those days for the safety of the students. The ice is still not gone, which shows you it was really bad. It would have unsafe to not close school for three or four days. Schools were closed for the fourth day mainly because of parking lots not being cleared. I did not mind missing school those three days. It stinks that we do not have the long winter break, but it was worth being safe at the time of the storm.

  10. Yes because i live not even two minutes away from roncalli ant it took us over ten minutes to get there. yes becaue then we would have to make up four days which would be harder than three days. yes we should have had those days off and we should be in school at the end of the year

  11. I felt like the roads were bad the first day but we could have gone on thursday. Thursday the roads were clear. Although I feel this way there is also another aide of me that thinks it was an intelligentt decision to let the weather settle down before attending school again. I guess it all depends where you live. Me living only 5 min away there was no issue getting to school. For me those days off gave me time to sleep in due to always working after school at my job and being exhausted.

  12. I think the conditions were bad enough to close the schools for the first two days, but I did not expect them to be closed for more than those two days. It was not wise for some schools to be open on Friday while others were closed. All of the schools should have resumed school before friday because the main roads were clear enough to drive on. Roads within neighborhoods do not normally get cleared off, so the inhabitants of the nrighborhood should have prepared for the horrible weather in advance. Having those three days off put me further behind in my classes considering I would still have to take my quizes and tests when school finally resumed. The days that make the most sense to me are the Friday and Monday we were going to have off because those are the closest snow makeup days, but the third day should either be made up at the end of the year, or not at all.

  13. I have no idea if this would even be possible, just throwing it out for conversation...

Would you be willing to come to school on a Saturday in exchange for not having to add a day at the end of the school year (assuming that it would have to be a Monday)?

  14. I think conditions were bad enough to warrant closings for 2 days. I really do not think we needed the third day off. I was so surprised when I looked at the website and saw that we had Thursday off, after we had already been out of school for two days. I had driven to the north side for a dentist appointment on Wednesday and the roads seemed fine to me. It was wise to keep some schools out on Friday because they have buses. It was worth it to have the first two days off, because the roads were really bad the first two days and I would rather be safe than have a four day weekend. Obviously the first two days are being made up next week, when we had a scheduled 4 day weekend, but I don't think the third day should be made up. We can't just change the date of graduation, because people have already gotten their announcements, and it's dumb to go to school after graduation.

  15. I agree with Danielle when she says that roads with neighborhoods do not usually get cleared off anyway. My neighborhood is still really icy, and the main roads are clear, which is how it was on Thursday when we were off.

  16. I agree with Jack when he says that he would rather have a long winter break, but it was worth being safe at the time of the storm. I would much rather be safe at the time than run the risk of getting in a car accident trying to get to school.

  17. I think that the conditions were bad enough for the first two days. However, I don't think it was really neccessary for the third day to be off. With that being said, I think it was smart for some schools to return on Friday. There is no reason to miss more school than neccessary. I don't think it was really worth having that extra day off. I mean it was definitely nice to have a little break from the stress of school, but I would've rather just gone because now we have to make it up. I think it makes most sense to to just not make up the third day. What difference is one day of school going to make?

  18. I agree with Christina about it was actually smart for some schools to stay out on Friday. The safety of kids who take buses was at risk.

  19. I agree with Kylie. I think it really just depends where the student lives. Some kids live over an hour away while others only live 3 to 5 minutes. There's a big difference in the type of roads people travel on as well.

  20. I think the conditions were bad enough to close schools for three days. I do not think the conditions were bad enough for schools to be closed on Friday. I was able to get to school fine on Friday. It was worth it to have those days off because the roads were so bad. Many people were getting stuck on the ice and getting into wrecks. We should make up two of those days off on the four day weekend. The other day should be made up at the end of the year. I feel one extra day at the end of the year would not be too bad because we are taking finals anyways.

  21. I agree with Christina that we should not have to make the third day up. I think one day of school is not that big of deal to miss. If we add it on to the end of the year it would change our graduation date. Many people have already made plans set around or for graduation.

  22. I agree with Kylie in how it depends where you live. Different parts of the state were hit harder than others. It is up to the school to decide upon the safety of their students.

  23. yes, i agree that the closings were appropriate. i believe that all schools shouldve went back friday because the roads were mostly cleared up by then. since we only have two more built in snow days for the year, making up the third snow day would be pointless. and coming to school on a saturday would not be a good idea since there are sports and such going on.

  24. I think that the ice and snow did warrant for 3 days off. I believe that IPS was a little cautious with giving their students four days off, but if you are going to error, it might as well be on the side of safety. Yea i think it was worth the time off. It gave me a chance to catch up on some homework and it allowed me to relax a little bit.

  25. I think the schools did the right thing in closing 3-4 days. It is very difficult for large buses to get through the ice on the roads, let alone the unplowed and unsalted neighborhood streets. Also, you do not want a bunch of teenagers who just got their licenses to begin driving in what might be the worst weather they ever see. I didn't mind having these 3 days off. I think we should just forget about the third day because one day will not effect us.

  26. i agree with Kim when she says that we shouldn't make up the third closing day of school we had, because one day doesnt really make a difference on getting made up.

  27. i agree with Christina that the graduation date cant be changed, because that would be unfair to all the seniors.

  28. I think that the conditions were bad enough to close schools for three days. I agreed with what Roncalli didby making us come to school on that Friday. I don't think that the third day even requires a make up day. In the long run i feel that missing that one day of school wont effect the overall outcome of a students education. Teachers could make up that third day by maybe speeding up their lessons.

  29. I do not agree with Brad when he says that it wasn;t such a bad thing that IPS schools got the fourth day off. Our education system in Indiana is failing. There are alot of kids who do not go to school on a regular basis. one day is taking one step towards bettering our education system. One day does matter to schools with an overall failing record.

  30. I agree with Taylor when she says that we should not make up the snow day on a Saturday. It would be impossible to plan a saturday where everyone was free. People are too busy with sports, work, family, etc. to come to school on a saturday. and to be honest I do not think that even half of the students would show up. I think that parents would be ok with calling in for their kids because they also know the one day will not make much of a difference.

  31. I agree with brad where if a school is not sure what to do they should definently lean on the side of saftey.

  32. I agree with Nick, one day from missing school would not affect our futures, but school boards will probably not bend the rules under any circumstance.

    ReplyDelete
  33. i agree with nick becauseif we miss more than one day of school we can ruin our futures.

  34. Iagree with Kylie. We could have gone to school on Thursday because the roads were not that bad. I also agree on the fact that where you live does play a role in whether or not you could get to school savely or not. I live about 20 minutes away from school and I take the back roads to get there. It took about 40 minutes to get to school and about the same amount of time to get home.

    ReplyDelete
  35. i agree with agree with brad that i fwe dont know if it is safe to be in school or not we should always go with the safe side and cancel school

    ReplyDelete
  36. I agree with Kim's idea not to have the third day off. School should have resumed on Thursday because Roncalli does not have a bus system, so the students could have driven to school. Mr. Weisenbach says that your savety is more important than school, so if we feel getting to school is difficult then we have the choice to stay home.

  37. I agree with Alex. The roads were bad and in the end safety was the ost important thing to consider when it comes to the students and staff.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I agree with Robbie. It took me forever to get to school and we got stuck once on the ice on our way. I know th conditions would have been much worse the days before as well.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I agree with Nick Bell in that the one day of missed school would not matter if it was not made up. Roncalli and the rest of the schools around the state should have been closed like Nick said for the safety of the students.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I agree with mason. The roads were way too bad to try to drive on. Even businesses were closed because of the weather. The ice covered everything and there is still ice on the ground even today. I think they should find days during the year to make up and not wait till the end of the year though.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I definitely don't think that we should come to school on a Saturday. I don't think that anyone would come. There are too many things going on during the weekends as it is.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I agree with not making up the third day we had off from school. It won't complicate things as much. We shouldn't complicate the school year anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I agree with nick making up a school day on a Saturday is not fair to students because we cannot predict the weather.

    ReplyDelete
  44. With various sports and activities the majority of students would not show up on a Saturday so it would be pointless for our school to require this.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I believe having school on Saturday would not be possible. People have tournaments, family events, practices, and church.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I believe that making up the third day would be pointless. But i also believe making up the other days were pointless too. I think we will have to make them up though.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I agree with Brad when he says that the third day is pointless. Instead of going through the trouble of making up another day and changing everyone's plans, the schools should just not worry about it.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I agree with Alex about the safety issue. Students have to drive on all different kinds of roads, and the schools don't know how bad those roads are. I think they did the right thing by making a safe decision. Better safe than sorry.
